In the summer of 2020, while world was in Covid and school was on zoom, I felt that all my friends and I needed more interaction than zoom could offer. We appreciated the situation with Covid, but wanted to look beyond that. I started  the ‘Happiness Club’ to support all of us at this time for moral and mental support – no agenda, no learning, no rules – just a safe place where any HM middle schooler could join in the afternoon and play interactive games…we laughed, we played and we made sure we all got through Covid together.

In 2022 a friend of mine confided in me that she had tried to commit suicide. I was shocked beyond words, and truly did not know what to do. As I researched the subject of teen mental health and suicide, I was surprised to find how big a problem it was. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 15-24 year olds, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death, greater than cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and only behind unintentional injury.

It occurred to me that us high schoolers and teenagers, were more likely to confide in their peers first about such issues, before parents, teachers or other adults. And all of us needed to be better informed and aware of such issues, and know how to handle these situations and support each other.

I have always found solace and comfort in my singing, and I knew its positive effects from my summers at Columbia and Brown on neuroscience. I met Logan Kelly in my volleyball team, and we discussed what how important sports was to her. It occurred to us both that music and sports was the potential solution to support our peers. Not to be award winning singer, or a to get into a sports team – but just to be a bathroom singer or playing in a friendly match in any sport.
